Kevin... I have measured for reach to the switches. It is only a minor stretch where they are at the moment.
Nothing I can't live with. But this is not the final design, yet.

I worked on modifying the steering mechanism.

The new design is on the right.
I wanted to clean up the pivot point that was to be on the outside of the frame.
So I slide everything over to the right and centered the pivot points in the middle of the frame.
One attached and the other free moving.
I will have to measure travel distance, so as to determine each arm/lever length.

Looking at the weld bolts, I just remembered I have some grade 8 shoulder bolts that just might work for this.

I hate to burst your bubble BUT that switch panel looks UGLY, not verry "hot rodish"
need a refresh! what do all the switches etc control?
A better control panel could be cobbled together.

No bubble burst.

I welcome the feedback, because, as I said, something just didn't see/look right.
Not sure what, if anything I will do at the moment.

The switches were meant for lights, turn signals, and accessories. But that is also being rethought.

You say .."A better control panel could be cobbled together".

Maybe so...I'm open for suggestions. But I want to 'think out of the box', crazy is good, and as you say, staying close to the 'hot rodish' look.

Such as not using the switch panel at all, and just using the pedestal switches.

Is it because you're marrying contemperary looking switches with an old style rod. Perhaps you need some older looking switchgear? Perhaps Steampunk style switches to try to disguise that it's running on new-fangled electricity?

I think you are right.

Just another thought about using the switch panel or similar.

This overhead location is much easier to get to and it isn't quite as visible.
But I'm still not satisfied.

Some body and windshield frame mod.
Because I needed to raise the roof,(no pun intended), a couple of inches, I had to modify the top portion of the windshield.
So another lawn chair is sacrificed because it has nice factory corners.

thinking about that console. When did a hot rod EVER have a console??
IMO, look at using some diamond plate and inserting old style gauges.
move the seat maybe forward (looks tooo far back)
procure a steering column with turn signals and headlight switch"s etc..
customize with the center of column for an LCD display (battery monitor etc)

Thanks for your feedback Idaho.

Not too many in the early years of hot rod building, circa 1940-50s. Models used during that time frame included cars in their 20's - through the early '30s.
It is more predominant in cars/vehicles in the later years' --- the late '30s and later.

I have thought often of using DP, but can't bring my self to do it, just yet.

I know I said this wasn't built for comfort.....but there is a limit.
My knees and other posterior parts are close to being uncomfortable as is.

There is very little room for anything but a steering wheel on the column. And that will be iffy, which will decide which type and size steering wheel, or another method will be used. I'm drawing up a steering column and associated lever connections as we speak.

I had thought about getting a golf cart steering column, but I would have to cut it down and modify it for my use anyway. So I might as well go ahead and make a purpose-built design just for this car.

Regardless of what they may or may not have had, there was a limitation based on what was available. This one is a bespoke design and on its way to pleasing its creator, can have whatever its creator wants - with compromises.

I'm enjoying the ride and I'm not even there.

The urge to get started on the steering, hit today.

I'm using a support tube from a salvaged basketball hoop framing.
Wedged in is a 3/4" bore shaft collar. One on each end. The top shaft collar is welded near the top of the post.
The bottom is plug welded in. I took advantage of hole that was already there.

The top of the column/post is 18 " from the frame top to the bottom of the steering wheel.

Next is to cut the 3/4" shaft and weld on a hub for securing the steering wheel.

My knees come just about the same height as the top of the steering wheel.

This is what I'm working off. It isn't exactly what the finished steering will be like, but it's close.
I haven't decided if I want/need to go to, the bother of making the DIY tilt-away option.
Looked online for quick release adapters, one which would work just right.

While setting it up, I was in/out and up/down frequently and did quite fine.
I'm sure when it's secured it won't fall over as many times... :D
Though it could be a detail used for conversation.
Also, the front brace won't be quite so large.

It's just visible, but near the bottom, just above the magnet is a bolt, that will be used to secure a front brace.

Ok, the column is done and bolted to the frame.

Doing a fit check. Can't decide if I should keep the tall shaft, and maybe use it as a flag pole, or cut it down to size.

Dual purpose: Use it as a flagpole and also slide the steering wheel up it to drive while standing.
That's so funny Kevin.
I'm imagining driving down the parade route while standing. Such a cool idea.
Maybe I could rig up a high stool, and drive along with my head in the clouds.

I feel a picture coming on.

Tilt Steering/Switch Panel Update

My latest idea for making the steering wheel tilt out of the way while getting in and out.
I did find quick release adapters online, but I don't want to remove the wheel, just get it out of the way momentarily.
The tilting adapters I found where OK, but I wanted to make it myself.

And making it myself helps to keep the " Thanks..I built it" idea alive, which is the whole idea...right?

New switch panel idea.

It's less obvious and within arms reach.
Though not to scale here, it illustrates the idea.
