Atomic Zombie's Bicycle Builder's Bonanza

With 16 fully detailed and easy to build bicycle projects, you will keep busy in your garage or backyard for months! Recumbent lowracers that outrun city traffic, choppers that spit in the face of conformity, winter bikes that take on the most hostile environments, and a few extremely fun rides that simply defy explanation.

All of the projects presented in this book can be built from easy- to-find parts using the most basic tools. Veteran builders will appreciate the detailed plans, and newcomers to the bicycle hacking scene will learn from the easy-to-follow layout and many concise detailed photos. All of the plans in this book can be built from start to finish, or altered along the way to create unique vehicles limited only by the builder's imagination.

"The Marauder" - A comfortable lowracer that keeps up with city traffic.

This laid back recumbent bicycle represents the best of both worlds - speed and comfort. Sporting a hydraulic disc brake, 27 speeds, and an aerodynamic over-seat steering system, this bike can hold it's own against city traffic, and outrun many of the very expensive upright bicycles that may cross your path. Because of the very low riding position, wind resistance (the main force acting against a bicycle) is greatly reduced. Also, because of the riders recumbent position, it is easy to put full force into the pedals, as compared to an upright bicycle, where you would simply lift your own weight off the seat if you pushed too hard.

"SkyCycle" tall bike - Featured on page 134 of the 2005 Guinness Record Book.

Shown on page 134 of the 2005 Anniversary edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, the SkyCycle stands tall under the category "Feats of Engineering". SkyCycle has also been shown in several magazines such as The Examiner, FHM, USA Today, Nickelodeon Magazine, and it has had a lot of television and radio exposure around the world - not bad for a bicycle made from nothing more than a few lengths of thin-walled electrical conduit and a pile of spare bike parts! Are you brave enough?

"The HighLander" - An Oldskool chop made from electrical conduit.

Looking like a relic from the movie "Easy Rider", the HighLander is a genuine old school chop complete with over the shoulder ape-hangers and a simple low and long frame. Built from nothing more than a few feet of thin walled electrical conduit and some old bike parts, this chopper is just screaming to take on the open road.

"KoolKat" - A nimble short wheelbase recumbent for city driving.

The short wheelbase recumbent is both fast and highly agile - a great bicycle for zipping around crowded city streets. This recumbent not only offers aerodynamic advantage due to the position of the rider, but allows for a higher vantage point in traffic, helping the rider keep track of any potential dangers.

"The SnowBus" - A winter tandem trike that can take on any weather.

Winter blues got you down? Is that summer bicycle hanging in your garage until the snow thaws? Not this year! Meet the SnowBus, a bullet proof tandem trike that will laugh at anything old man winter has to throw at it. With two front wheels, the SnowBus simply cannot fall over no matter how slippery the terrain - slush, snow, or ice is no problem for this winter warrior.

"The Coyote" - A very fast front wheel drive Lowracer for the track.

For the adrenaline addicted speed junkie - sight seers need not apply! This bike is built for one single purpose, and on purpose only - all out speed. Seated in an extremely recumbent position only inches from the ground between two 27inch racing rims laced with high pressure tires, you are set up to put your full effort into the pedals. Sporting an unusual front wheel drive transmission, single front chain ring and minimalist frame, the lowracer is built as simple and light as possible.

"Mountain Tandem" - Teamwork for the off-road terrain.

Built by joining together two similar mountain bike frames, this simple to build and practical tandem is a great project for the couple who want to hit the trails together. Only a single extra tube is needed other than the original bicycle parts to complete this easy to build project, and it can be done in a few evenings. Even if you decided to purchase two medium quality mountain bike to build this project, the result would be a tandem bicycle of fairly high quality for hundreds of dollars less than a commercially available unit.

"The SpinCycle" - Pull radical 360's and stunts on this wild machine!

This is a one of a kind tricycle that can perform out of this world  maneuvers that really have to be seen to be described! The transforming Spin Cycle has two modes of operation - as a recumbent trike, or as a highly maneuverable side winding trickster.

"The HammerHead" - A bullet proof trike for winter riding.

Here is a trike that fears no terrain, no matter how hostile or impossible it may seem to the standard two wheeled mountain bike. The HammerHead has two front ends, so it cannot tip over on slippery winter ground, even on a skating rink the trike has surprisingly good control. With a trike like the HammerHead, you can stay in shape all year round - no more waiting for summer to get back to the cycling fun.

"The Detachable" - Safely add another rider to any bike.

When you're young, it's hard to keep up the pace and distance of an experienced rider on a full size bicycle, and when your not so young, it's a real drag to move so slow - enter the Detachable Tandem. This kid sized half-bike just connects to the seat post of any adult bike allowing the pilot to keep up the pace and actually participate in the team effort of pedaling.

"Unicycle & Sidewinder" - A tall unicycle and a bike that defies physics.

Have fun with a Giraffe Unicycle, or pull impossible stunts on a bike that can turn a full circle in less than two feet! No matter which one of these projects you build, there will be thrills and spills, but most of all a lot of fun. The Giraffe Unicycle can be build as tall as you like, although it's best to start off at a height you don't mind falling from (over and over). A unicycle is great fun to master, and can be done in a few days time.

"The Wild Bull & InvertaBike" - A single wheel bike and a tall bike.

The wild bull is a bike with half the bike missing. It looks impossible to ride, but the trick is the welded freehub - it makes the unit act more like a recumbent unicycle. This project is really a blast to learn, and gets some strange looks from bystanders as you scoot on by on your half-bike. The InvertaBike is a simple to make tallbike that does not involve a lot of work. In fact, only a few feet of scrap tubing is added to the standard frame in order to give the pilot a five foot boost. This is a fun to ride project that gets a lot of double takes from bystanders. With a pair of Invertabikes, you could have a jousting tournament!

"Skyscraper & Dirty Rat" - Two easy to build choppers with attitude.

Two cool choppers that started out with unlikely donor bikes. The SkyScraper (made from a granny bike) leans back in angst with it's extendo forks cutting a swath before the rider and the Dirty Rat (made from a girlie bike) is perfect for the young female rider that just ain't cool with flowers and pink hearts on a bike.

"The Basics" - Learn to hack 'em, then learn to weld 'em.

There is also a section dealing with Bicycle Hacking and Welding Basics. Bicycle Hacking will guide you through the process of completely taking apart a bicycle, identifying and removing every single component, cutting up the frame for use in your own custom creations, and even restoring the damaged parts for later use. Welding Basics takes you through the process of cutting, welding, and grinding steel tubing to create your own custom or highly modified frame. There are no hard to learn skills, expensive equipment, or previous experience necessary - just a hardware store welder, hand-held grinder and a bit of patience is all that is required to turn your dream creations into reality. Get those sparks flying!
